SCARD

This national charity is currently looking for volunteers in the Yorkshire area to staff their Helpline, giving telephone support to people bereaved or injured in road collisions. The only requirements are that you have a landline telephone and have a kind and caring nature.

This vital work is done at no cost to you, in the comfort of your own home. Your age is unimportant and retired people are welcome.

AFTER SCHOOLS CLUB FACILITATOR
The Carers’ Resource

This is an opportunity to work with young carers in a safe environment, where they can get a break from their adult role of caring for an adult or sibling: and be a child again. This very active Tuesday afternoon club is for carers aged 9-11 years old and, at the moment, it’s mainly boys with a lot of energy and who crave attention, encouragement and praise.

The volunteer would work together with a member of staff and a teaching assistant. No formal qualifications are required, just a desire to help young carers and have fun at the same time. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

CRAVEN REPRESENTATIVE

Are you willing and able to listen to others, join in discussions and write or give verbal feedback to a small committee? Are you free on occasional Tuesdays? Can you travel within the Yorkshire area to York?

If so, the Society is looking for a representative to attend three meetings per year to listen to (and pass on) views from and to the Craven area within a small gathering of volunteers who wish to promote and help improve services for people with dementia across Yorkshire.

RSPB
Residential Volunteering Scheme

The RSPB can offer placements as a volunteer warden for up to 4 weeks on one of 37 nature reserves throughout the UK. Longer periods of work placement are available by arrangement and interview. All are subject to availability.

Other volunteering opportunities with the RSPB are also available, such as monitoring nature reserves or joining with local farmers to survey the birds on their farm. If the idea of donning boots and binoculars is not for you, there are many opportunities in the RSPB offices around the UK. Alternatively, many activities can be carried out from the comfort of your own home.

SPECIAL CONSTABLES: North Yorkshire

Special Constables are volunteers who receive training to work with and offer support to regular police officers. They have the responsibilities that come with full police powers and will serve a minimum of 4 hours a week.

The volunteer will:
be part of one of the NYP’s neighbourhood policing teams
respond to many and varied incidents
have the ability to deal with a range of challenging situations

The skills and experiences gained as a Special Constable can help in personal life and career outside of the police service.

EXTENDED SCHOOLS:
North Craven

The purpose of Extended Schools work is to develop and maintain schools as a hub of service and activity for the local community. Much of this is achieved by partnership working.

Kitchen Gardener
Do you fancy helping in Jamie Oliver’s goal of educating children about where their food comes from and healthy eating? Please come and help the children to design and set up a new kitchen garden where they can grow organic fruit and vegetables—which they can cook in the school kitchen and eat for their lunch.

After School Club Helper
Assistance is required for after school clubs, so if you have a range of talents and interests and would enjoy working alongside employed staff, you could help with primary school aged children. Days and time are negotiable depending on the availability of the volunteers.

The volunteer must be of a sunny, open and honest disposition. Experience of primary aged children through work, or as a parent/grandparent, is preferred.

Gardener
Do you have an interest in gardening and enjoy working with young children? Support is needed to set up and run a gardening club. Days and times are negotiable and informal training on working with children, as well as health and safety in a school setting, will be given.

CRUSE BEREAVEMENT CARE
Treasurer

Cruse Bereavement Care is in need of a Treasurer who could report to the Management Committee every six weeks or so. This also involves making an annual report, budget forecasts, as well as giving advice on grant applications and more major expenditures.

If you enjoy working with figures and would be free to visit the office for half an hour, once a week, this could be for you. If required, you could ’shadow’ the existing Treasurer, from whom support would be offered as needed.

REFRESHMENTS

A Refreshment Helper is needed for a Skipton group of disabled people, on Mondays and Wednesdays.

SKIPTON AND CRAVEN ACTION for DISABILITY
Charity Shop Assistant

Do you have an interest in retail? Perhaps you could spend a few hours helping at our Crosshills shop assisting with sorting the items donated to the charity - on a day to suit you.

A good attitude to others and a pleasant character are the qualities you need and previous retail experience is not essential, as training will be given. You should be smart in appearance and capable of dealing with things in a responsible and professional manner.

GAP YEAR’ PLACEMENTS
CSV has a huge range of exciting and challenging opportunities. Volunteers could be assisting kids with disabilities in a special needs school supporting people with learning difficulties in a day centre enabling a disabled person to live independently in their own home helping in the running of a homeless shelter, mentoring a young person at risk of offending or being excluded from school

Volunteers are also needed to support students with disabilities at UK universities, helping with tasks such as taking lecture notes, helping students get out socially or providing support with household tasks, personal care etc

Volunteers move away from home and are provided with accommodation, training and support, along with money to live on and the opportunity to be part of a big team of volunteers across the UK.

These are fantastic opportunities for people to develop skills, enhance job or UCAS applications, build confidence and make a real difference to someone’s life.

For more details, please contact CSV on 0800 374991

HOME FROM HOSPITAL’ SCHEME - Volunteer Centre Craven
Do you have a few hours to spare? Do you enjoy visiting people?

Perhaps you could make a difference to an older person’s life by helping on our Home from Hospital scheme. Volunteers are needed to visit clients who have been in hospital: to shop for them, collect prescriptions, perhaps make a sandwich or just keep them company —for up to six weeks.

If you are aged 17 or over, with a friendly, caring nature, this could be for you. Out of pocket expenses will be paid and some training will be offered on various social care issues throughout the year.
If this is the opportunity for you, please contact the Volunteer Centre on 01756 701648
